Webinar: Expert Testimony

Description

ATSA members are increasingly being called into the courtroom to aid legal arguments regarding everything from sentencing and revocation dispositions, treatment and risk management needs, sex offense registry decisions, and civil commitment decisions. Not everyone who is asked to testify has the prior training and experience needed to be effective. Even those experts with prior experience can benefit from increased knowledge and practice, as the consequence of ineffective testimony, or worse, misleading testimony, can result in unfair outcomes to our clients, misunderstanding of the science, and a decreased confidence in our field and opinions. 

This three-hour presentation will address the basic information members should know and do before stepping into court including how to prepare and communicate with attorneys. We will review research on jury decision-making and effective testimony, how to testify during cross examination, and ways to ensure your testimony is not misleading. Lastly, we will discuss ways to debrief from your testifying experience.

Sharon Kelley has been a forensic psychologist specializing in risk assessments of individuals with sexual offense histories for the past two decades. She currently operates a private practice where she conducts sexual reoffense risk assessments related to civil commitment in WI, CA, WA, and IA. She is also a member of the ATSA Board of Directors and Interim Co-Editor in Chief of Sexual Abuse. Both in her practical work and research projects, she is a staunch advocate for best practices. As such, her research has centered on risk assessments, understanding evaluator decision-making, estimating long-term and undetected sexual offenses, and the effect of protective factors and treatment change on sexual offense recidivism.
