ATSA’s Prevention Community of Practice is an exclusive member benefit designed for individuals working in—or interested in—primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention of sexual abuse. Whether you're focused on preventing first-time perpetration, early intervention, or reducing recidivism, this group offers a collaborative space to share expertise, discuss challenges, and advance innovative approaches to prevention across the lifespan.

Each quarter, the Community of Practice features a timely topic and guest presenter to spark discussion and deepen our collective understanding. 

This quarter, we welcome Dr. Maggie Ingram, a nationally recognized expert in the prevention of child sexual abuse (CSA) and problematic or harmful sexual behavior among youth (PHSBY). Dr. Ingram will present on covert incest—a rarely discussed form of emotional abuse that can include inappropriate sexual boundaries and result in harm similar to overt sexual abuse. Her session will explore what covert incest is, why it is often missed in clinical and prevention settings, and how practitioners and researchers can better understand it.

Following the presentation, participants will engage in a facilitated discussion to shape the future direction of the Prevention Community of Practice—ensuring it is responsive to member needs and grounded in the diverse realities of prevention work.

Maggie Ingram, PhD, MHS, is a public health scientist and recognized expert in the prevention of child sexual abuse (CSA) and problematic or harmful sexual behavior among youth (PHSBY). She earned her PhD and Master of Health Science from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, training in the Moore Center for the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse. In her most recent role, she served as the CSA prevention lead scientist and subject matter expert for the CDC's Division of Violence Prevention, overseeing their groundbreaking portfolio of research focused on evidence-based approaches to prevent CSA and PHSBY. Dr. Ingram has spoken at a congressional briefing about CSA prevention, been interviewed on an abuse prevention podcast about PHSBY, and given dozens of talks, presentations, workshops, and trainings related to these topics. She recently served as a lead author and key subject matter expert on an update to the 2007 CDC report on the best available evidence for preventing child sexual abuse in youth-serving organizations, and her contributions to this project were recognized in the form of CDC’s “Excellence in Leadership in Public Health Service” award. Dr. Ingram is a highly sought after consultant, collaborator, and subject matter expert for matters related to CSA and PHSBY.
