Course description: CalATSA welcomes professionals that work in any area of sexual abuse intervention to attend this presentation. The purpose of this talk is to cultivate collaboration, optimism and skillfulness among professionals that work to maximize sexual abuse interventions. “Interventionists” are the treatment providers, victim advocates, program administrators, judges, attorneys, supervision officers, and other professionals that jointly work to prevent sexual abuse. Through collaboration and a holistic approach, we can reduce sexual abuse across the prevention spectrum. We can reduce the prevalence of first-time offending and reoffending. We can improve outcomes for those victimized. We can engage those convicted of sex crimes in empirically informed interventions and effectively assist these persons in desisting from further abusive behavior and creating socially acceptable and personally fulfilling lives. However, well intentioned professionals and the systems “offenders” are in can exacerbate the risk factors that lead to sexual offending and create new challenges. This talk aims to help professionals expand our positive impact and mitigate harmful outcomes, including bias, ethical breeches, vicarious traumatization, and therapeutic pessimism. 

This “welcome” presentation by CalATSA president to sexual abuse interventionists communicates our organizational goal to improve outcomes through collaboration across the sexual abuse prevention spectrum.
